This is the only woodpecker with small spots on its underparts, males are identified by their entirely red crown and facial streak resembling a moustache. Females are identified by their brown facial and throat patches.
Habitat: Broadleafed Woodland and thornveld.
Solitary, in pairs when breeding or sometimes in small groups. They forage about 70 % of the time on the ground, also on branches and trunks of larger trees Their flight is undulating.
Food: insects. Breeding Usually October to November. Nest: A hole which has been excavated in the trunk of a tree or in a branch, clutch: 2-4 Eggs.
